There are two remaining major railways on Vancouver Island. The SouthernRailway of Vancouver Island, which assumed control of the Esquimaltand Nanaimo Railway from Rail America in July 2006 offers general freight service on theVictoria–Courtenay main line (called the Victoria Subdivision bythe railroad). The Port Alberni branch line (called the Port AlberniSubdivision by the railroad) has been out of service since late 2001.
