Artist Spotlight - Sol Maya Glass Artist in Tofino
"Sol Maya was born in Central America of Native American, Mayan ancestry. He became involved in art in California at Santa Barbara City College, where he learned the art of glass blowing. Sol moved to the North Shore of Vancouver 15 years ago. He worked with David New Small on Granville Island and at a studio in West Vancouver before relocating to Vancouver Island. Now a Tofino resident, Sol continues to evolve his unique hand blown glass techniques at his studio/gallery “Spirit of the Fire.

The Ring, which is Sol’s own take on an ancient art form, is an amazing new development in hand blowing glass. This new way of working hot glass is very fresh in its approach while maintaining traditional ways. “I didn’t reinvent the wheel…just made it nice and shiny like today’s modern wheels.” “My ancestors loved the stars and so do I, so my work resembles space; celestial bodies, nebulae and planets. Closer to home, as a devoted surfer, my work also reflects my love for the water, as seen in my fish pieces and glass starfish.” The “Spirit of the Fire” gallery/studio is located in the Outside Break parking lot, behind Beaches Grocery, on the highway as you head into Tofino. It is frequented and admired by thousands of visitors from all over the world. Here they have an opportunity to witness an art form that has been around for thousands of years. The children especially have a special place in their hearts for the studio and the magic is reflected in their smiles.
